Types Of RVs
Class A Motorhome
Class A motorhomes are built on a unique chassis frame, which makes the
recreational vehicle self propelled. The cockpit is integrated with the
living area. Class A motorhomes can range in length from 24 to 40 feet long.
Class A RVs offer the ultimate in the RV lifestyle, with the most room,
and the most versatility in floorplans. They are perfect for long road trips
or lengthy stays once at your destination. You can expand the width of the
living space with one, two, three, or four side pull outs. Like the other
types of motorhomes, you can get a used class A motorhome relatively inexpensively,
or go all out on a full-sized, luxury RV.
Class B Motorhome
Class B motorhomes are also known as van conversions. This is because the
living area is designed within the space of a van chassis, but usually with
a raised ceiling (they range from 7 to 9 feet high). The length of a class
B motorhome can range from 16 to 21 feet. The size and convenience of van
conversions make them well suited to weekend getaways. These RVs also put
the RV lifestyle in the budget of more travelers. Space is at a premium,
so eating areas convert to sleeping areas. You still get all the conveniences
you need: a small stove, refrigerator, sink, toilet, and shower.
Class C Motorhome
Sometimes referred to as a “mini” motorhome, and ranging in
length from 16 to 32 feet, the Class C motorhome is built on a cut-a-way
van chassis. The Class C is easily distinguished by the sleeping area built
above the cab. This design allows for larger living areas and bathroom accommodations
in the main area of the RV. The Class C motorhome can be 9 to 10 feet tall,
giving plenty of head room. Similar to the Class A motorhomes, the cockpit
is open to the living quarters in the rest of the vehicle. These features
make this type of motorhome good for weekend traveling and shorter vacations,
giving you many of the advantages of the Class A motorhome, but at a smaller
price.
Travel Trailers
These trailers have an A-frame and coupler, and are intended to be towed
by a vehicle with a ball mount. Travel trailers vary in size, and can have
one, two, or three axles. Many are lightweight and can be towed by vans,
smaller trucks, or even by cars. A pop-up trailer (or folding trailer) falls
into this category, and they range in length from 8 to 16 feet long. This
category also contains what is known as “conventional” trailers,
which are generally larger in size (12 to 35 feet long) and have facilities
including kitchen sink, refrigerator, dining table, shower, and flushing
toilet.
Toy Haulers
Toy haulers are a special type of hybrid designed to suit the most active
kind of traveler. Combining the living quarters of a traditional motorhome
with the cargo space of a travel trailer used for hauling toys such as ATVs,
jet skis, motorcycles, and anything else you can fit in. They range in length
from 19 to 40 feet. Larger models can sleep a family of five or even more.
This kind of RV avoids the need for triple towing, while still accommodating
all your needs. Like all RVs, there is a price to fit any buyer. Smaller
toy haulers, brand new, can be purchased starting at $15,000. Luxury models
are also available.
Fifth Wheels
Fifth wheels are the largest types of trailers available. They are towed
using a special hitch located over the rear axle in the bed of a pick up
truck, so in order to haul this kind of trailer, you must have a truck with
the proper hitch. The trailer is designed with a raised level toward the
front of the trailer which goes over the bed of the towing vehicle, and
is generally used for sleeping quarters. This “bi-level” floor
plan gives even more space to these large trailers. Some fifth wheels even
have extendable sides for truly spacious on the road living.
