What kind of used rv is best for me?

Now that you’ve decided to purchase a used rv, a whole new crop of questions comes to mind. Tent trailer? Travel trailer? Fifth wheel? Motorhome? What type of used rv is best for me?

used rvs

Well, only you can answer that question, as you know your personal needs and desires best. The following is meant to assist you in deciphering the differences in makes and models of rv’s, and hopefully help you find what type will be just what you’re looking for.

There are several different “classes” of RV’s. Tent trailers, often called pop-ups, are an inexpensive way to enjoy the great outdoors. This class of RV is a reasonably priced class, with a used rv in this class sometimes starting at around $1,000. Most tent trailers don’t offer the amenities that the larger classes do, but they are a great way to move up from camping in an actual tent. Some tent trailers offer a toilet, some a toilet and shower combo, a kitchen sink, and sometimes a stove. The base and roof of the tent trailer is hard, but the sides are all canvas, similar to a tent.

The next larger class of rv is the travel trailer. Many travel trailers offer full amenities, such as a bathroom (toilet, sink, and a shower), a stove/oven combo, a microwave, and a refrigerator, depending on the make and model. If you are considering this class of used rv, keep in mind that most travel trailers range from about 18 feet up to over 30 feet. The larger ones are not so much meant for road travel, but rather meant to be permanently parked and enjoyed.

Another alternative class of rv is the fifth wheel. These must be towed using a pickup truck. The design of these is unique, in that the part of the body that sits over the hitch is oftentimes an “upstairs” bedroom. Inside, steps lead to this bedroom. It is a nice feature in a used rv because this is completely separate from the main living space, allowing for separation between the living area and this bedroom. Fifth wheels can also come as a toy hauler, where there is a garage-type area in the rear with a large door that comes down, to haul and store toys like dirtbikes, quads, etc. This type of used rv can range in size from just under 20 feet to well over 40 feet in length. The longer the unit, the heavier, which will require a stronger pickup to tow.

If you don’t want a used rv that has to be towed, then the Class C or Class A motorhome may be what you’re looking for. A Class C motorhome is the smaller of the two, often referred to as the mini-motorhome. The cab of this class of used rv resembles a van, and has a bunk located over the cab of the unit. The size range for this class is similar to that of the other classes of rv’s, with the capability of towing a small vehicle or trailer behind it. This type of used rv is nice for long road trips, because the passengers have the ability to move around within the rv while it’s being driven.

The largest and most luxurious class of rv motorhomes on the market is the Class A. This class of rv resembles a bus, and is oftentimes the same length as many buses. With full amenities and luxuries that rival many custom homes, the Class A motorhome has just about everything needed to live on the road. Full bathrooms, bedrooms, kitchens, and sometimes a washer and dryer make these RV’s a very nice way to travel. This luxury comes with a hefty price tag, though, starting at around $50,000.
