Campervans are small mobile homes built on
a van frame. Traditionally Class B RVs or camper vans had a pop-up tent-like
top. Although you may find some models like that today, most camper vans
now have a vertically extended hard-top roof. These recreational vehicles
are perfect for one or two individuals who want the freedom to travel without
having to stay in hotels and eat all of their meals at restaurants. Some
more elaborate campervans may sleep more than two people depending on the
layout, and would be great for a weekend campout with the family in the
mountains or at the lake. If you are interested in Class B RVs there are
many reasons to consider them for your recreation needs, including practicality
and features, safety, fuel economy, and cost.
Practicality and Features
When you are looking at campervans and other recreational vehicles you want function as well as form. One of the main reasons for buying an RV is so that you can have the “comforts of home” while you are on the road or out in the great outdoors. Class B RVs not only have places to sleep, they have gas burners for cooking, a sink and a bathroom, and places to store your essentials. The space is well-designed and organized so that you will not feel cramped. You can get awnings to put on the outside for added comfort and for a place to gather for meals and socialization. These campervans really are proof that big things can come in small packages.
Have you ever driven an SUV? If you have, then you will be able to drive Class B RVs. As was pointed out earlier, they are built on a van frame. Campervans are the smallest of the recreational vehicle classes and therefore, they are easier to manage than a mini-mobile home or motor coach would be. Finding a parking space is much simpler and actually parking your RV is similar to parking a car. These campervans can fit it places where a motor coach just can’t. You don’t have to find special parking spots or park in the farthest corner of the lot to find room enough to maneuver and park.
Safety Issues
If safety is an issue that concerns you, then you should look at Class B RVs. They are lower profile than either motor coaches or mini-motor homes and therefore are not affected by cross-winds as much. Your ability to back up, pass, and turn will be similar to that of a car. You don’t have to get a special permit to drive Class B RVs like you would with a motor coach.
Fuel Economy
With gas prices skyrocketing and with no end in sight, fuel economy is a great concern to most travelers. Class B RVs average around that of an SUV. Remember, you can sleep in your campervan in an actual bed, and you can cook, and clean as well. Motor coaches have huge engines and therefore huge gas tanks and huge fuel bills. You will also be saving money by driving Class B RVs because you will not need to stay in a hotel or eat at restaurants.
So whether you are looking to buy a new or pre-owned RV you owe it to yourself to look at a campervan as one of your options. It won’t hurt, and it just may be the help that you have been searching for.
